Blue Angel issues a new textile & shoe product label

The Blue Angel jury decided that there will be a new label for textiles that sets high demands regarding the environmental quality of the labelled products:

In addition, the Blue Angel jury decided to take social standards into the certificate. For instance, textiles and shoes labelled with the Blue Angel in future “have to guarantee compliance with the ILO core working norms in the whole supply chain of the product”, as the Environmental Minstry recently explained in a press release:

This certainly needs more clarification in detail, which I could not find on the website. Momentarily, certifying such demands sounds almost impossible to achieve only regarding the garmenting part, so I wonder how the Blue Angel wants to assure this for the whole supply chain. It will be interesting to thoroughly examine those products that will first become certified. I expect that a great danger of reputation damage is awaiting the Blue Angel.

The Blue Angel is a well-known environmental product label in Germany, designed to protect the environment and health. It is used by over 10.000 products. It claims that its brand awareness is at 80% – which makes it “the world’s most renowned eco-label”. See here, how the Environmental Label Jury, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, the Federal Environment Agency, and the RAL gGmbH are “in charge” of the label.
